This is a beautiful example of Damascene jewelry, which is made of etching into the metal, hammering gold or silver on to the base and using a liquid to oxidize and create the black background. The design originates from Europe and the middle East, and often features geometric (as seen here) designs and those of birds and nature. This brooch is an example example and has sharp, crisp lines and is slightly curved. It measures 1.5" in diameter and is in excellent condition.
