This is a wonderful find- a vintage abstract brooch by Joseff of Hollywood, maker to most of the jewelry shown in films in the early to mid 20th century, including Camille, Shanghai Express, and Gone with the Wind . This particular piece has a matte gold finish rounded teardrop shaped base to four curling stylized leaves or ribbons. It measures approximately 3.5"long by 1.5" at the widest part. It is signed Joseff Hollywood on a raised plaque in upper case letters, which dates it to the 1930s-40s and therefore early piece.

The company has an interesting and sometimes tragic history. Eugene Joseff apprenticed at a foundry, and starting making jewelry in his parents' garage in Los Angeles. He was committed to having some historical basis for his designs, and started to amass a large reference library to that end. His career took off, and soon actresses wanted to wear his jewelry in their off-screen lives. As World War II approached, he was contracted to make small aerospace parts in areas of his jewelry factory, which continued until 2018. In 1948, Eugene died in a plane crash, and his wife took over the business, against the advice of many, who felt it was too big a task. The company flourished! Each year, the Christmas tree was decorated with pieces from the shop. That would have been something to see.
